Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Millions of passengers stranded across the globe, families desperate to return home...

thousands upon thousands of flights canceled causing chaos across the world.....

Billions of dollars lost by the airline industry as airspace across Europe shut down....

the economy, of not only a major continent, but the entire world affected...all in a matter of just a few days.

Food supplies ran short as fresh produce rotted in cargo.

Health officials issued warnings concerning public health, while experts worried about severe weather worldwide.

And why?

All because a volcano, only a mile and a half wide in size, somewhere way up north, let out its steam and ashes.

Subhaan Allaah!

Could you ever imagine that something like this, taking place thousands of miles away from your home, could actually disrupt your life and plans?

Yet the ripple effect of its massive ash cloud reverberated worldwide and literally paralyzed man.

All it took was one little puff....one blow.....from a small volcano....out of the many, much bigger, and more powerful volcanoes that Allaah has created on this earth. 

And all this volcano is, is a trivial, trivial creation from among the creations of Allaah Subhaanahu wa Taala.

And look how it affected man. Look how it affected his life. It left him powerless, weak and subjugated.

So what will you do O man, when the entire earth will shake and the skies will shatter...when the stars will fall and the mountains will crumble?

To whom will you run and where you will you hide?

Doesnt this volcano and its ash make you think of Allaah....His Irresistible Power, His Invincible Might....His Authority and Command?

Doesnt this show His Supreme, Unsurpassable Ability to do anything and everything, any which way He pleases?

And all this is easy for Allaah.

And if it wasnt for Allaah and His Immense, Overwhelming Mercy towards His slaves, He could have done this every day.

Every single day, there could be volcanoes blowing ashes....or the earth trembling... ..or the sky falling on our head. 

Yet, it is He that placed mountains on the earth so that it wouldnt shake and made it stable and walkable and liveable...for us to flourish and farm and cultivate. And He made the sky a roof over our heads, a shade and a protection from the elements in space. Shouldnt we be thankful?

"He (Allaah) has created the heavens without any pillars, that you see and has set on the earth firm mountains, lest it should shake with you." (Surah Luqman: 10)

And if it wasn't for His Favor and Generosity, there would be no night and no day.

Or there would be a long night, a night so long that it would be continuous until the day of resurrection. Or a day that is continuous until the Day of resurrection.

"Say: 'What would you think if Allah should make the day continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, what god, other than Allah, shall bring you the night to sleep in. Will you not see?''

Say: 'Think! What if Allah should enshroud you in unceasing night till the Day of Resurrection, what god, other than Allah, shall bring you light! Will you not hear?' (Surah al-Qasas:71- 72)

How scary that is and unimaginable! Yet Allaah does not do that to us. He gives a short night so that we can rest therein and a short day for us to be up and about and work. Shouldnt we be grateful?

There would be no clouds, no rain, no wind, no food.

No air to breathe, no clothes to wear....

no eyes to see with, no ears to hear with and no feet to walk with. No heart to love and no memories to remember.

No butterflies, no flowers, no colors and no beauty.

No families, no friends, no loved ones.

Birds wouldn't fly and ships would sink.

No cars, no planes, no computers.

Subhaan Allaah. I can go on and on.

Yet out of His Compassion and Kindness he gives us all that without asking, and every single thing that we did ask for, every single day of our lives, to every single one of us.

And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allaah, never will you be able to count them. Verily! Man is indeed wicked and thankless. (Surah Ibraaheem: 34)

Alas! As Allaah says, we are ungrateful and thankless. We are so involved in our lives, its fun and enjoyment, so engrossed in all the blessings that we have around us, that we forget to thank the Lord of the blessings. We are so arrogant that we associate everything to our selves and our achievements and our power. We lose sight of the source of the blessings, the One who gave us the blessings in the first place.

We forget that the best way to thank Allaah is to submit to Him...to obey Him and worship him the way He deserves to be worshipped, without associating partners with Him Subhaanahu wa Taala. Not to disobey him and to follow the Sunnah that His Messenger (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) brought.

Therefore, Allaah sends us reminders... reminders, like ash from an insignificant volcano, that incapacitates and debilitates us, so that we may remember and reflect...so that we may be thankful and submit to His Might and Power.

So take lesson from these signs and reminders that your Lord sends to you and truly appreciate His innumerable blessings upon you and thank Him from the bottom of your heart. Realize the Ultimate, Supreme Greatness of your Lord and the fragility and insignificance of your own.

Know that you are nothing but a speck of dust in front of the Mighty Plan of the Lord of the worlds and if He so wished, you would be annihilated in less than a second and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, you could do about it. 

So live your life according to what He has ordered and submit to Him before its too late.

Where are you going to go when the 'REAL' volcano blows...?

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, seek His aid and forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our souls and from the wickedness of our actions. Whosoever Allaah guides, then none can misguide him and whosoever Allah misguides, then none can guide him.

We often hear that reciting some prayers or verses of the Quran bring us closer to God or brings some special blessings.

In the Quran, God has expressed love and support only for those people who develop certain human qualities and not for those who only perform rituals. [1-7]

Ihsan [goodness]

The root word of Ihsan is "Hasana" which means to do right, to improve, to be in a desirable condition or in a proper state, to decorate or embellish, to treat with kindliness.

In the Quran it is used for forgiveness, generosity, struggle for goodness and against evil and humbleness.

Taqwa [moral consciousness]

The root word of Taqwa is "waqy" which means to guard oneself against the negative influences of one's own deeds. It is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, between justice and injustice.

Sabr [patience]

The Arabic word for ‘patience’ is ‘sabr’. The primary significance of the word ‘sabr’ is ‘(self)-restraint’ but it also signifies forbearance, composure, equanimity, steadfastness, perseverance, and endurance

Qist [justice and fair-mindedness]

The Quran has used several different words in the context of justice; Meezan (balance), Qist and Adl (justice and equity).

The word Meezan is derived from ‘wazana’ and it means balance, equilibrium or to distribute equally. It is also used in the meaning of equity, justice and fairness.

The word Qist means justice, fairness, equity, fair-mindedness, rightness or correctness.

The word Adl means to act justly, equitably, not to discriminate, be equivalent, to make straight, to be in a state of equilibrium, impartiality, justice and straight-forwardness.

Tahara [cleanliness]

The word "Tahura" or "Taharah" in Arabic have the following meanings: to be clean, pure, and purify. The words "Tuhr" means: cleanliness and purity like the word "Taharah".

One of the aims of teachings of the Quran is to purify the believers physically, psychologically and morally. 

Tawakul [trust in God]

The root of "Tawakul" is "wakala" which means to trust, rely and depend. Trust is God is natural outcome of one's faith. As disussed above, the trust in God acts as the stabilizing factor in human personality.

Tauba [repentence]

The root word of tauba is "taub" which means to repent, to be penitent, to turn from sin, to convert from and to renounce. Repentance means changing the bad action into good ones, or leaving the sins immediately and affirming that the individual will not commit it again in the future.

Characteristics or Qualities which God does not love 

Kufr [ungratefulness]

Fasad [corruption as well as any of our act that causes disturbances to the society]

Takabbur [arrogance]

Zulm [to do wrong, to oppress, to ill-treat, darkness]

Kheyana [disloyalty, breach of faith, deception, fooling]

Israf [waste] {Extravagance - in every thing we do }

May Allah swt guide all of us to practice it. Ameen

When scholars contradict

I asked Khalifa bhai, { a brother in Islam, who is blessed with sound knowledge and understanding of deen}, that what shud be our stand when two scholars contradict . WHom shud we take. His answer was worth sharing here, with you all. 

It was like this :

Islam is clear path in the sense that it tell us what should be our faith clearly without leavin any ambiguity with regard to Allah and His attribute.

Now, fact that there are some disputed issues in Islam does not make it ambiguous religion. Dispute arises just because Allah himself have not made something clear to us and He being all knowing did it deliberately. Intelligence is one of the great gift of Allah SW that He had given us and this is to be used in the matter of Deen as well as in acquiring worldly means. Islam encourages us to think and ponder upon issues instead of giving us complete and rigid solutions. Morever, when it comes to issues of jurisprudence, many of the issues are related to context and condition in which we live. So, giving a rigid solution would make more problems and sometime it would become impossible to follow the ruling in varying contexts.

So, it is flexiblity and ease that Allah SW has given us considering human weakness and considering the fact that Islam should be practiced in varying environment till doomsday.

Now, regarding the question that what is proof that if we follow a genuine scholar in disputed issue we will not be questioned.

This is how it goes.

1. It has be clear from Quran that we must obey Allah and His messenger.

2. But, obeying Allah and His messenger is subjected to knowledge a person acquire

3. Everybody cannot get same degree of knowledge because of the varying context in which they are born in and because of various degree of intelligence, memory and attitudes humans have.

4. Some of the people who specialized in Islamic knowledge by devoting their full time of Islam knowledge must be considered more knowledgeable subjected to their degree of intelligence and sincerity.

5. Thus practically it is not possible for a common person to acquire enough knowledge to form an opinion in disputed issues.

6. I am not willing to devote my time to prove a common person wrong if he insists that he has enough knowledge on a subject and can form an opinion based on his own knowledge and intelligence. He will be judged by Allah SW. If he is right he may get reward for it and if he wrong he is answerable to Allah SW. This is he who has to justify his act on the day of judgement.

7. Now, what if there is a dispute between scholars who has sound knowledge, wisdom and sincerity? Well, for a common person, he has to be sincere in obeying Allah and His messenger and should do his best to get most right opinion. If in this process he err or the scholars to whom he follows make mistake, the person cannot be responsible.

8. Proof! well it is simply established by the last verse in Surah Baqarah

On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith."

A righteous servant and his/her sound mind agrees with the legislation, the intellect, and the Fitrah.

The worshiper prefers the pleasure of Allah to his own desires. He devotes his energy and efforts to Him. The servant does whatever good he is able to do for Allah’s creation. Therefore, he shows love towards the creation in a way that he would like them to show affection towards him. He treats them the way that he would like to be treated. He calls them by the names that he likes to be called. He advises them with advice that he would give himself. He chooses for them that which he would choose for himself.

He bears their harm and injury although they may not tolerate his. He refrains from defaming their honor and he does not seek retaliation when he is slandered. If he sees good in them, he spreads it and if he sees evil he conceals it. He establishes excuses for them within his ability without nullifying the Shari’aah. The obedient worshiper does not contradict the commands and prohibitions of Allah. Along with that, he has good and righteous character. He possesses virtues such as forbearance, dignity, tranquility, mercy, patience, and fulfilling promises.

In addition to these noble traits, he is also gentle-natured and truthful. His chest is safe from rancor, deception, malice and envy. He possesses humility towards the poeple of Emaan (faith) but he is firm and unwavering toward the enemies of Allah. At the same time he safeguards himself from having to surrender and humble to anything other than forgiveness, bravery, generosity, morality are all virtues that comply with the Shari’aah, fitraah and intellect.

Moreover the good servant prefers the best food. This is the wholesome healthy, lawful food, which provides the body and soul with the best nutrition. Likewise, in his selection of wives, companions and even fragrances this person only desires the best and most suitable. As a result, his soul, body, character, actions, speech, food, drink, clothing, marriage, his associates, and his final resting place are all good.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Al-Hasan a1-Basri (May Allah bestow His mercy upon him)] said: “What a bad servant [of the Lord] is he! I am speaking of a servant who fits the following description: 

1. He asks for forgiveness (maghfirah), while he is actively engaged in sinful disobedience (ma’siya). 

2. He behaves in a humbly submissive manner, so that he may be credited with loyalty (amana), but he is only pretending, to hide his disloyalty (khiyanah). 

3. He forbids what is wrong, but does not refrain from it himself. 

4. He enjoins what is right, but does not act upon his own instructions.

5. If he gives, he does so very stingily, and if he withholds, he offers no apology.

6. If he is in the best of health, he feels secure, but if he falls sick, he becomes remorseful. 

7. If he is impoverished, he feels sad, and if he gets rich, he is subject to temptation. 

8. He hopes for salvation, but does not act accordingly. 

9. He is afraid of punishment, but takes no precautions against it. 

10. He wishes to receive more benefit, but he does not give thanks [for what he has received]. 

11. He likes the idea of spiritual reward, but he does not practise patience. 

12. He expedites sleep and postpones fasting”

Do not be sad: 

You became despondent due to a calamity, and by doing so, created addition calamities. You became depressed because of poverty and this only increased the bitterness of your situation. You became gloomy because of what your enemies said to you; by entering into that mental state, you unwillingly helped them in their attack against you. You became sullen because you expected a particular misfortune, and yet it never came to pass.

Do not be sad: 

Truly a large mansion will not protect you from the effects of depression; and neither will a beautiful wife, abundant wealth, a high position, or brilliant children.

Do not be sad: 

Sadness causes you to imagine poison when you are really looking at pure water, to see a cactus when you are looking at a rose, to see a barren desert when you are looking at a lush garden, and to feel that you are in an unbearable prison when you are living on a vast and spacious earth.

Do not be sad: 

You have two eyes, two ears, lips, two hands, two legs, a tongue heart, peace, safety, and a healthy body. (Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both [jinns and men] deny?) (Qur’an 55:13)

Do not be sad: 

You have the true Religion to live by, a house to live in, bread to eat, water to drink, clothes to wear, a wife to find comfort with; why the the melancholy?
